What makes Hebrew hard to transcribe

Hebrew is written right to left and, like Arabic, normally omits vowels entirely. A three-letter root can be read as a noun, a verb or an adjective depending on vowels that were spoken but are never written, so the transcript has to commit to one reading using sentence context alone.

How accurate to expect

Modern spoken Hebrew from broadcast and conversation transcribes well. Liturgical and Biblical Hebrew use a different register and vocabulary and are considerably weaker.

What usually needs fixing

1. 1 Choosing the wrong reading of an unvocalised root, since the vowels that disambiguate are never written.
2. 2 Foreign names, which have multiple accepted Hebrew spellings.
3. 3 Arabic and Russian loanwords common in Israeli speech being rendered inconsistently.

Getting better results

• → Modern spoken Hebrew is well covered; liturgical and Biblical Hebrew are a different register and transcribe less reliably.
• → English and Arabic loanwords are extremely common in Israeli speech and appear in Hebrew letters.
